Students are taught to write compositions using a variety of grammatical tenses and structures in semi-controlled to freer compositions. The emphasis is on grammatical structure, but various types of organizations, such as description, narration, classification, comparison, and contrasts are also introduced and practiced in guided formats. Students will advance in fluency and oral comprehension of more complex English sentences. Students will participate in oral comprehension exercises; will learn common American idioms and use them in conversation; they will also participate in class discussion of relevant subjects and present short prepared speeches. (NC)

 

Students will improve reading comprehension and rate; the will increase vocabulary through assigned readings, word study exercises, and discussions. Readings deal with a variety of subjects, including American culture, academic and personal issues. (NC)

 

This course covers the basic grammatical structures using an intensive approach that aims at greater accuracy and speed on the part of the students. The students will be able to process longer, more complex sentences with more ease and fluency. Special attention will be given to the difference between appropriate written English and the spoken forms used in everyday conversations. (NC)
